Top 10 Things to Do Before Moving Day

Moving house can be a really busy and stressful time. Planning is a really important aspect of moving and can help eliminate some of the stress and ensure everything goes well on moving day.

When it comes to planning consider the following as a guide to what to do before moving day.

1. Make a Checklist

There is so much to do and often the little things get forgotten. Make a list of everything that needs to be done prior to moving. As you think of new things add them to the list.

2. De-Clutter

Moving is a great time to de-clutter and donate anything you don’t want or need. This will make your packing easier and eliminate the need to find space for it in your new home.

3. Find a Removalist

When choosing a removalist, be sure to obtain 3 quotes and remember that a low hourly rate doesn’t always mean the move will end up being cheaper overall, especially if a cheaper company ends up taking longer and causing damage to your items. Be sure to check their online reviews. This will help them determine how long they may need on the day and provide a more accurate quote.

4. Notify Utility Companies

Let your utility company know you are moving and need to disconnect the utilities in your current home and connect them in your new home.

5. Change Your Address/Re-direct Mail

Change your address on any mail you currently receive. Also, have your mail redirected to your new address in case you have forgotten to contact anyone.

6. Obtain Moving Supplies

Make sure you have enough packing boxes and packing tape to pack all your belongings. There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of packing and running out of supplies.

7. Pack Non-essential Items

Start packing anything you won’t be using in the short term as soon as possible. This will help save you time closer to the move.

8. Organize Insurance

Make sure you have organized home and contents insurance for your new home.

9. Make arrangements for children and pets

Moving day can be busy so if possible arrange to have someone look after your children and pets. If you can focus solely on moving then you will finish a lot quicker!

10. Pack an Overnight Bag

Pack an overnight bag with anything you may need for your first night in your new home. Chances are at the end of moving day you may not have the time or energy to rummage through packing boxes looking for a toothbrush!

Hopefully these tips will help alleviate some of the stress associated with moving and contribute to a moving day that runs smoothly.

5 Top Tips to Avoid Surprises in Your New Apartment or House

There are good surprises and those that are not-so-good. When it comes to moving in the Greater Toronto area, you want to avoid surprises that can delay or significantly set-back your moving efforts. There are ways you can minimize the surprises before your move so that it goes as smoothly as possible.

Of course, it begins by hiring the best movers Toronto offers in terms of their professionalism, service, and keeping to your schedule. Here are the five top tips when it comes to avoiding surprises in your apartment or house before the moving day.

1. Not Forwarding Your Address

One of the first things you will need to do is make sure that your mail goes to your new address. It usually takes about a month before all your mail can be forwarded to your new address, so starting the process early will help. You can expedite it by calling the companies and billing agents yourself to change the address of your mail.

2. Marking the Wrong Boxes

One simple trick to avoid having boxes wind up in places where they do not belong in your new home is to mark clearly on the side where they need to go. This means your kitchen items go in boxes marked “kitchen” and so forth. Be sure to keep your boxes open until the night before the move when you can make one last check for any item that was not accounted.

3. Not Enough Boxes

One of the biggest surprises that many people face when moving, especially at the last minute is not having enough boxes to hold your items. It’s usually a big surprise because moving boxes seem to be everywhere until you are ready to move when the seemingly disappear. So, get your moving boxes as early as possible and keep them folded up in storage until you are ready to start packing.

4. Extra Stuff Lying Around

There is no feeling like believing you have everything packed and taken care of when suddenly you discover a new batch of items in a drawer, closet, or storage area you forgot all about. The effect of the surprise is greater the closer you get to moving day. So, to avoid going into shock when you find items at the last minute, have a few extra moving boxes handy just in case you overlook areas of your apartment or home when moving.

5. Leaving Late on Moving Day

You may have planned everything to the Nth degree, but one of the bigger surprises comes on moving day when you look at your watch and realize just how long it is taking. You’ll want to be prepared for that eventuality the night before by having all the boxes near the front or garage door so they can be loaded quickly and starting as soon as possible so you can get out on the road.

If you are considering moving in the Greater Toronto area, the earlier you start planning, the better off you will be. This is especially true when you hire the best movers Toronto residents trust with their items. Always remember to choose the best moving company with the sterling reputation to ensure that your move goes as smoothly as possible.

5 Reasons Why You Should Plan Your Move in Advance

If you are thinking about moving soon, the earlier you start to plan the better off you will be. You do not want to be caught on moving day having to do tasks that should have been accomplished days, even weeks earlier. Naturally, you will want to get your moving supplies in order, find a reliable moving company, and start collecting moving boxes for your packing.

But there is more to moving than just hiring the best of the moving companies in the Greater Toronto Area offer. So, here are five reasons why you should start early to be truly prepared when moving day arrives.

1. Better Organization

It may seem a little strange to start packing a month before moving day, but there are good reasons why you should get the process going.

  • Make the Appointment with Movers
  • Purchase Moving Boxes
  • Get Packing Material
  • Start Organizing Your Items

By getting the initial steps out of the way, you can start putting items into their boxes or packaging materials. Start with the items you have in storage and then go room by room to ensure that everything is covered.

2. Finding the Right Moving Supplies

There always seems to be plenty of moving boxes, packing materials, and accessories until right before moving day. So, you’ll want to stock up early to have what you need for your move. The longer you wait, the less likely you will find the supplies needed for you to fully move your items. So, even if you have not started packing, go ahead and get the boxes, packing material, and supplies needed for your move.

3. Easier Packing

You don’t want to be in a rush when you pack your items. Instead, you want to have enough time to go through your residence and make sure that everything is covered. Waiting until the last-minute means overlooking important items that may get left behind if you are not careful. So, the earlier you start, the easier your move will be.

4. No Last-Minute Rush

By starting early, moving day becomes far less hectic as you have everything in place to go. Starting a month early by packing away your stored items. Followed by packing up one room at a time while leaving the boxes open for anything you forget until the night before means that moving day is a far more pleasant experience.

5. Getting the Right Movers

You only want the best, so be sure to hire reliable and friendly movers to handle your valuables. While price is an important consideration, you should think in terms of getting the best services first with the cost being the tie-breaker. The earlier you find the right moving company, the easier it will be to get an appointment for the day you need to move, and the better your chances at getting a lower price.

Top 3 Things To Do After Moving!!!

1. Unpack the boxes

While you may feel overwhelmed looking at the stack of boxes in your living room, kitchen and bedroom, resist the urge to start unpacking. Instead, unpack the boxes on an as needed basis. Say, for instance, if you discovered that you need to use a utensil, you can open the appropriate box, and get the item out. This trick will make the packing process seamless and will save you lots of time, and it will work extremely well if you mark your boxes correctly. Always make sure the boxes are placed in the right section of the house or apartment to avoid moving stuff around.

2. Change your postal address

Moving from place to another means your address will change, even when you are only moving few blocks away. As such it is paramount that you change your address as soon as possible to ensure that you continue receiving your mail. Scammers seize the opportunity when you move to intercept your mail and compromise your personal information.

“Don’t forget to give some cash to the new owners/renters of your old place so that they can forward your mail until that entire change of address thing takes effect,” says Anthony Bale, an expert writer at The Moving Blog. You could ask the new owners/renters how much they will like you to leave for postage stamps. Hopefully, they request a fair and reasonable amount.

3. Acquaint yourself with your new home

A new era has begun and you feel like you are in an unfamiliar environment. Don’t panic. This happens to almost everybody. Take a moment and do a quick tour of the house to appreciate its beauty once more (you must have had a few tours around the house or apartment during the time of purchase or prior to signing the lease agreement). However, for some reason, it always feels different when you actually move in.

Test your appliances, taps, and shower to make sure they are functioning as expected. Check and test the fire alarms and smoke detectors. If the house or apartment doesn’t have a fire alarm or smoke detector, make sure you buy one and install it on the day of your move, if possible. This is very important. Make sure the doors and windows are safe.

7 Top Tips on How to Plan a Move

Moving is less of a headache if you plan well in advance of your target move day. You need to plan on how to pack, get the right mover, get the new place ready and plan for storage in case all items cannot fit in the new place.

Pick a moving company

Choosing a moving company is not about getting the lowest price. Safety for your items is more important as there are irreplaceable items like family jewelry and other antiques. You also have to be on the lookout for scammers.

Get at least 3 quotes and pick the one that is the most comprehensive i.e. the mover offers an all-inclusive service covering items such as moving boxes, or use the services of a reputable moving services brokerage firm.  Do your due diligence to ensure that you and your belongings are protected.

Get your new home ready

Do not wait to get to your new home to fix anything that needs fixing. Inspect beforehand and note whatever cleaning, painting or repairing is needed.  This means that on the day of moving you will unload your packing boxes without getting distracted by these chores.

Plan for the time overlap

The time between gaining possession of your new house and moving must be planned for to avoid confusion and save money. Will you be moving on the same day? Will you wait for a few days before moving?

If you need to move before gaining possession of the new house, you will be forced to plan for storage. If you have a few days before moving in, you can use the time to make repairs, clean and do any other chores that are needed to prepare the home.  If you are moving on the same day, you have to coordinate with the previous owner to avoid clashing.

Get packing boxes

If the moving company does not provide moving boxes, you have to get suitable boxes early enough.  It is possible to get free boxes from liquor stores, retails stores and book stores.  Copy boxes are very good as they are strong and can be lifted easily without the bottom falling. They will be more than happy to get rid of them.  Assess the hallways of the new house so that your boxes will be movable.

Plan your packing

You can unpack easier in your new home if you packed with a consideration of what is essential and needed on the move day e.g. utensils and  beddings . These should be packed last so they can be unpacked first.

Label your packing boxes for easier identification of where all items are to be placed. Avoid packing perishable food. Get rid of junk to save packing space.

Ask for help

The more manpower the moving company deploys to your job, the more you will be charged. You can lower this cost by asking family and friends for help. Do this weeks or days prior to the target move day so they will not feel ambushed. Ask them what they would like to help with to get them more enthusiastic.

Know your new neighbors

It does not hurt to let your new neighbors know that you will be moving in and if there is anything they can tell you about the new place and neighborhood in general.

Packing Tips for Moving

Packing is an art that can be very handy when relocating. Movers will complain bitterly and charge more for poorly packed boxes.  Packing can be done right by following some few basic tips:

Use good boxes

This might seem obvious but using good strong boxes will keep your items safe and will be easier to handle.  Cardboard boxes are the best for packing moving items. These boxes are available at supermarkets, liquor stores and book stores. Look for copy papers as they are relatively strong and do not tear easily.

Pick the right size

Boxes that cannot move through hallways are a nuisance. Small items like personal care products should go into small boxes. Light but bulky items like towels and bed linens should be packed in medium sized boxes.

Load manageable weights

Boxes should not be packed over 20 Kgs. They are likely to tear out at the bottom. Heavy boxes should be reinforced with tape or cotton twine so that the bottom does not sag. Tape should be wrapped all-round the bottom seams where weight load stresses the box most.

Heavy items should be packed at the bottom of the boxes. This will make lifting easier as they will balance easier in the hands.

Do not leave empty spaces between items as this will unbalance the boxes. Empty spaces can be filled with towels, packing paper or clothing.  Every full box should be well sealed with tape and no item left sticking out.

Labeling boxes

Each box should be properly coded according to use of items. Bathroom items should be labeled as such and so on. This will make unpacking easy and fast.  You could also have a notebook showing what items went into what box for faster identification. Avoid mixing items from different rooms into one box to avoid confusion during unpacking and displaced missing items.

Wrap breakables

Breakable items like glassware should be shock proofed. If bubble wrap is not available, they can be wrapped in cloth so that they do not bang on each other.  Dishes should be packed on their sides and not flat.  Pack the dishes in groups of six. Place bowls and cups interlocked in one another with padding between them.

High value items

Items like plasma TVs should be packed in special boxes. Quilted boxes are very ideal for packing TVs and other sensitive items like paintings. TVs should be placed upright and never on flat.  If quilted boxes are not available, you can double pack the TV. This is placing the TV in a padded box and then placing the box in another padded box.

The mover will charge you extra for handling special items. Weigh the value of the item and the extra charge to see if you can take the risk of packing it yourself.

Small items

It is very easy to misplace small loose items such as jewelry, remotes, chargers etc. You can place them in a small box. Items like bolts and nuts should be taped to their items, for example furniture.

Moving to Toronto? The Pros and Cons

Toronto has been named by Forbes as one of the power cities of the world alongside others like New York, London, Shanghai and Tokyo among others.  This is one of the most culturally diverse cities in North America with over 50% of the residents being immigrants.   Business opportunities, food, art, and great weather are all pullers to Toronto.  It is a great city to live in with world-class services in education and health.

The Pros of Toronto

The Greater Toronto Area draws in more immigrants per year than any other Canadian region. There are good reasons for this:

Business opportunities

Toronto is a financial and IT services hub. It hosts the Toronto Stock Exchange and has the third largest number of IT companies in North America after San Francisco and New York.  As the financial center of the Canadian economy, the city hosts many companies dealing in Canada’s vast natural resources including oil and gas, hydroelectricity, timber, and fishing among other industries.

There are plenty of job opportunities for educated people. According to Statistics Canada, over 150,000 jobs were created in 2015. With the economy set to grow at 3% for the next two years, opportunities are increasing.

For an immigrant with family, Toronto has some of the best educational institutions from elementary to tertiary level. The city has 3 top universities: the University of Toronto, York University, and Ryerson University. The University of Toronto was ranked 24th in the World Ranking of Universities in 2015.

The Toronto Transit Commission is the third largest transport system in North America.  The city has a well-developed network of streetcars, buses and the subway system.  The zip car is a unique Toronto feature where you can share a car billable by the hour.

The city is connected to the suburbs by the GO transit network of buses and subway system. These then connect the 401 highway to the rest of Canada and the US.

Life in Toronto

The diversity of culture in Toronto means there is always some festival or other events happening. There is a vibrant arts scene with the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Gallery of Ontario being major attractions. Ballet, dance, and opera performances are regularly held in venues such as the Center for Performing Arts and The Hummingbird center.

The Cons of Toronto

Just like any other big city, Toronto has its share of negatives.

Toronto has become very attractive to immigrants. The huge influx is showing as rent becomes higher and transport services get more crowded.

Anyone from mild climates might find Toronto’s weather a bit extreme. The summers are hotter and more humid than in other Canadian cities. The winters are also harsher than in cities on the same latitude in Europe.

Huge traffic has led to a rise in noise levels and air pollution.

All in all, Toronto can be said to be the best city to live in Canada.  The pros outweigh the cons. It has the same allure of a big city but with fewer challenges.

Our mission at Nodigore is to make your move between Toronto and surrounding areas simple, affordable and stress-free. We guarantee absolute satisfaction when you book moving services through our platform. We help our customers save time and money. Call us today at 416-800-2123 or visit to get a free instant quote.

How to Avoid Moving Scams

Moving from your parents, moving into your matrimonial home, and moving because the family needs larger are all reasons for moving at one point or another in life. The inconvenience of moving largely depends on your choice of the moving company.  While many are professional honest businessmen, there are some few crooks giving the rest a bad name by running scams.

Moving scams basically run on two premises:

  • You get a low estimate and once the goods are in the truck the mover raise the charge, sometimes holding your goods hostage.
  • The mover gives a very good quote but asks for an advance. Once the advance is paid the mover disappears or changes the terms offered.

The Better Business Bureau has put out red flags that one should watch out for to avoid being scammed by movers:

  • Quick over the phone estimates. The mover asks a few cursory questions and does not bother to send a person to do a visual estimate of the load.
  • The offer is too low when compared to at least two other companies.
  • Insistence on an advance deposit before a contract is drawn up.
  • The mover is hard to locate physically. The website does not state a physical address. A mover will have to park vehicles and have a warehouse for emergency storage. If these cannot be seen, the company could be fraudulent.
  • The mover is reluctant to offer any document like an invoice or contract.

The above warning signs should tell you to tread carefully or change your choice of movers. To avoid losing your hard earned money:

  • Always visit the moving company’s offices to talk to a rep and make visual assessment of the company’s capability. You can tell of a business’ professionalism by observing the office organization and the manpower. Invite the rep for a visual estimate of the items to be moved. Assess how fast and enthusiastic for your business.
  • Pick quotes from at least 3 moving companies to have an accurate estimate of what you should pay for. Scrutinize your price quote carefully to ensure that it includes all details to avoid extra charges later.  Avoid any hourly rate quotes. The mover can move rack up hours very easily in this arrangement.
  • Avoid committing any money as an advance fee. Commitment fees are usually small amounts less than $100. When a mover asks for a large advance fee like $500 ask for a receipt or a proforma invoice that is well drawn up and have it indicated in the contract.
  • Always ask for a contract or an agreement covering all the necessary details like price, points of departure and arrival, the date agreed and any other contingencies.
  • Avoid using the mover’s storage if you can. Leaving your goods in the hands of a stranger means you lose control over them. You could also be charged high storage fees.
  • If you suspect you have been scammed, report to the authorities. Fraud is a crime and you might recover your money before it is too late.

You can also stay clear off scammers by looking up your choice of mover on forums like the Better Business Bureau and other customer review sites.

At Nodigore, we only deal with trustworthy movers who operate with integrity. Our mover partners go through a rigorous screening process before they are granted permission to use our platform. Call us today at 416-800-2123 or visit to get a free instant quote.
